About MEWSo
MEWSo is a women's charity run by and for women from ethnic minority communities. The majority of the communities we serve are from Middle Eastern, North African and Asian backgrounds.
We were founded in 2010 by Halaleh Taheri after she fled war and revolution in the Middle East. Her experiences made her acutely aware of what it's like to be a refugee, starting a new life in a strange country, with uncertainty, prejudice, little or no legal rights and a host of emotional and/or physical trauma.
The aim of this charity is to defend and protect women from violence both at home and in the wider community, help them rebuild their lives through tailored advice, guidance and support, and campaign for their equality and human rights.
The Team
MEWSo's staff is made up of Halaleh, our executive director, advisors, project facilitators, an outreach coordinator and a communications expert.
All are committed to providing high quality, customised advice on welfare issues and domestic abuse; classes and workshops designed to improved service-users' skills, knowledge and understanding that will help them integrate; along with fun days out and entertaining experiences to help lighten their worries and mental stresses.
We speak Arabic, Kurdish, Farsi and English, have interpreters for other languages when needed, and also have a team of dedicated volunteers.
Our Board of Trustees is made up of women active and devoted to promoting women's rights and protecting the most vulnerable in our society. They meet every three months to oversee our activities, finances, policies and long-term strategies to ensure we work effectively, efficiently and responsibly.
If you would like to help MEWSo continue to defend and protect vulnerable women please to our cause whatever you can afford.
Whether a one-off donation or regular monthly payments, all will be most gratefully received. Thank you.
